Harlem Jazz Series – Darius Jones

Darius Jones is an extraordinarily gifted alto saxophonist and composer. He joined the New York music community in 2005, after living and studying in Richmond, VA. Darius comes from a diverse musical background, which led to his unique and soulful approach to music. His repertoire includes compositions and performances in electro-acoustic music, chamber ensembles; contemporary and avant-garde jazz groups, modern dance performances, and multi-media events. Darius has collaborated with other artists including Gerald Cleaver’s Black Host, Oliver Lake Big Band, William Parker’s Essence of Ellington, Eric Revis Quartet, Trevor Dunn’s Proof Readers, Nasheet Waits “Equality” Quartet, Bill McHenry, Elliott Sharp, James Carter, Jason Moran, Andrew Cyrille, Ryan Sawyer, Angelica Sanchez, Yo La Tengo, Beans, Brandford Marsalis, Chad Taylor, Sean Conly, Alex Harding, Sun Ra Arkestra, Shazhad Ismaily, Aruan Ortiz, Fay Victor, and many more. Darius’ 2012 release, Book of Mæ’bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) was listed among NPR’s Best Top 10 Jazz Albums of that year.

Harlem Jazz Series – The Freedom Art Quartet (F.A.Q.) ft. Lloyd Haber

The Freedom Art Quartet (F.A.Q.) is a melodic exploration in improvised music. Formed in New York City in 1991 by Lloyd Haber and Omar Kabir, the group’s diverse ethnic and compositional structure is a breath of fresh air needed to represent today’s music scene. “Our purpose is to explore and create in depth, the limitless dimensions of the art form.” The F.A.Q. has performed in various clubs, art galleries, and colleges at home and abroad. Festivals include the Heineken Jazz Festival, the Fire Wall festival, and the UVA Jazz Festival. Their debut recording “Spirits Awake” was met with positive reviews around the world. The Freedom Art Quartet was selected to appear on “NYC Disk Makers Best of the unsigned Bands” Compilation CD. Their music also appeared in the independent film from New Line Cinema, “Happenstance.” Throughout the years, many innovative artists have played within the core group including Ornette Coleman, Fred Hopkins, Ravi Coltrane, J.D. Parren, Abraham Burton, Jaribu Shahid, Brad Jones, Andy McCloud, Roy Campbell, Alex Harding, Jay Collins, and Patience Higgins among others.

Harlem Jazz Series – Dyer, Jones & Wimberly Trio

Michael Wimberly is a composer, percussionist, educator, and music producer based in Harlem, New York. Having recorded and toured internationally with innovative artists such as Charles Gayle, Steve Coleman, William Parker, Cooper-Moore, David Murray, and many others, Michael has earned his place in the pantheon of cutting-edge, avant-garde jazz drummers. As a djembe soloist Wimberly has been featured with Europe’s Rundfunk, Tonkuntsler, Leipzig, and the International Regions Symphony Orchestra performing “African Oratorio” by composer Daniel Schnyder. As a composer, Wimberly’s symphonic work, “Kora Saba,” has been performed by the Yakima Chamber Orchestra in Yakima, Washington, and the Sage City Symphony in Bennington, Vermont. His compositions also appear in dance companies Urban Bush Women, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Philadanco, Forces of Nature, Ailey II, Complexions, Ballet Noir, Alpha Omega, BalEthinic, Purelements, and The National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique. As president of Together with Music, and creator of the international percussion event Power of Drum, Wimberly is actively engaged with an alternative arts program whose mission is to make accessible to all youth, the learning of music and its relation to all the arts and sciences.
